About Soverity

Hey! We are Soverity, a group of software infrastructure veterans who care about digital autonomy. We’ve worked across all layers of the stack: from the data center to backend software. We worked at big tech, we worked at small startups. Together, we started Soverity.

Our mission is to empower people to control the digital infrastructure they depend on. We do that by building Substrate: open source software that makes it easy to operate a fleet of servers. You get the convenience of managed cloud services, but on your own hardware, on your own terms. We also offer consulting around digital sovereignty, especially related to cloud and bare metal.

By Europeans, for the world

We are a remote company based in The Netherlands, with people across Europe. We want the entire world to benefit from our software and services, but we care especially about strengthening the digital autonomy of our local communities.

We’ve been working on open source for the better parts of our lives. We run our company on open source software, hosted across multiple European vendors. We don’t depend on American big tech. That’s definitely playing the game on hard mode, but what we lose in convenience, we gain in resilience. It takes more than a blocked cloud account to take our organization down.

We care about the society we live in, and the planet we live on. Our profit cannot come at their expense. Fortunately the world is not a zero-sum game. We believe that a profitable business can make a positive impact. That’s what we strive to do.

We decide our own destiny

We are a software infrastructure company. Infrastructure should be boring and stable: our clients depend on it. You can’t build on a foundation that might disappear in two years. To build the trust that we will be around long-term, we have to be deliberate about who has a say in what we do.

In today’s world of venture-backed tech startups, stability is not a given. A new tool appears. It’s good, and accelerated by venture funding, it takes the world by storm. But when the venture capitalists demand a return on their investment, there is no sustainable business model, and the team is forced to betray its users. Open source is abandoned, “free forever” turns into a monthly subscription. The team gets aquihired and the product shut down.

We do things differently. We’re here to build a sustainable business, not a vehicle for an exit. We prioritize stability over growth, we care about the long term. That’s why we are bootstrapped: we are fully self-owned, with no plans to raise, and no intent to exit. We report only to ourselves. Not to venture capitalists who push for unsustainable growth. Not to shareholders who squeeze users for short-term gains. We have the freedom to make our own decisions, so we can do what we believe is right.
